Meet the Grower
Kevin started his career in horticulture in spring 1976. A baptism of fire as it was the year of the Great Drought. He studied Horticulure to HND level and also gained a Certificate in Education(FE). Prior to starting Thornhayes Nursery in 1991 with his wife Pat, he experienced 9 years employment as a College Lecturer in Horticulture at Bicton College, 4 years as a Local Government Landscape and Tree Officer and a short period in Garden Centres. His knowledge is broad and based on years of practical experience and observation; not just restricted to woody ornamentals and fruit, but extending to vegetable growing, land and livestock management and smallholding.
His passion for trees started at a young age, as he was known to gurgle at them from his pram. Whilst still being passionate about trees, he probably wouldn’t fit in the pram any more. As a boy he was a regular visitor to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire and the enthusiasm naturally led from running in the woods as a boy to a long term career working with trees. By his mid twenties Kevin was designing large scale tree planting on new dual carriageways in the Midlands; moving on to being a local authority tree officer in Somerset, before taking up teaching horticulture. Now approaching sixty, thousands of trees in the landscape of Britain are the result of his advice, designs and propagating knife.
He is able to offer sound advice on a whole range of horticultural areas, from management of park and woodland trees, through landscape and garden design, down to the smaller scale such as pruning fruit trees or growing vegetables. His knowledge of trees and shrubs is verging on the encyclopaedic.
