Burncoose Nurseries are one of the largest mail order nurseries in the country. They are also open to the public, so a visit to this famous nursery is a must for any modern day plant collector. Burncoose Nurseries has an excellent pedigree and is owned by Charles Williams whose family home is the famous Caerhays Estate, located between St Austell and Truro.
In 1911 J.C. Williams of Caerhays Castle funded the expedition of George Forrest, an early plant collector. Forrest collected thousands of seeds from China, many of which have become popular plants with gardeners around the world. Amongst the seeds collected included Camellias, from which the world famous Camellia x williamsii was hybridised.
The variety of plants is huge, truly something for everyone. However the nurseries offer three very specialist collections, Magnolias, Camellias and Rhododendrons, enabling you to choose from some exquisite varieties. The staff can provide services on plant selection as well as design and landscaping.
Visitors to Burncoose Nurseries can explore the neighbouring 30 acre woodland garden. The National Collection of Magnolias are in the grounds of the attractive Caerhays Castle which was designed by John Nash. A range of tours and lectures are available at Burncoose and Caerhays, a great way to find out more about this centre of horticultural heritage.
There is so much on offer at the Caerhays Estate including a range of holiday properties, commercial shooting, a farm and access to a beautiful beach.
