When other plants are dormant there is always an orchid in flower, so you can visit this indoor nursery throughout the year whatever the weather! Burnham Nurseries is run by Sara Rittershausen, who is the third generation of this world famous orchid collectors and growing family. Founded by Sara’s grandparents in 1950, it was then run by Sara’s father Brian and his sister Wilma. Sara’s mum, Ann is also involved with the nursery.
The family have built up a world class reputation, which is evident from their 20 Gold Medals awarded at Chelsea. In 2010 Brian and Wilma were awarded the prestigious Westonbirt Orchid Medal by the Orchid Society, in recognition of their horticultural expertise. The family have written several books about the subject, which you can buy from the nursery.
The nursery offers a range of courses and tours for those developing an interest in orchids and for those who have some prior knowledge. In addition, a range of events are held throughout the year, including free re-potting days and Christmas Shopping days.
All orchids are sold with a care guide and the experienced staff can also offer advice about how to keep your orchid healthy. Orchids can continue flowering for many years, making them a very cost effective and attractive house plant. They can also be used in cut flower arrangements too.
As well as the retail side, the nursery propagates species orchids and is involved with preserving rare and threatened plants. Orchid Paradise, which is alongside the nursery, provides a chance to see a display of some of these rarer orchids, set around a tropical pool.
The new coffee shop has a range of home made cakes, an excellent choice of loose leaf teas and other refreshments. A separate play area for children makes it appealing to all ages.
