The gardener’s garden centre. The nursery was started in 1912 by Arthur Cooling on just one acre of land. Now the present Chairman, Paul Cooling, heads up the business having taken over from his father Michael in 2005. Over the years the nursery has expanded to create two sites and now provides the widest range of plants in South East England. The 14 acre Gardeners Garden Centre is the centre of Coolings and home to Arthurs coffee shop. The second site, Coolings Green and Pleasant is only a mile away and features a new eco-building with two coffee shops, gift area, garden furniture and a 6-acre Nature Trail.
Coolings was voted the top UK Garden Centre by Garden Which? in 2010, beating off competition from high quality plant centres from around the country. This is in addition to an array of other prestigious awards received over many years.
At the core of the business is the family run nursery with a huge range of quality plants. They grow 200 varieties of shrubs, 500 varieties of herbaceous perennials, over 200 varieties of conifers, 150 different roses plus a vast range of trees. Over 1,000 trees for you to view at any time. In addition they grow 80% of the bedding plants at the nursery.
Other features include nursery tours for groups, such as gardening clubs, but they also can accommodate school trips, so something for all ages. With 140 staff, many of whom are horticulture trained, there’s always someone available to ask for advice or help to carry plants to the car.
