The nursery was established in 1975 and is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the Estate that provides an income for the heir to the throne, currently HRH Prince Charles. The Duchy estate was created in 1337 by Edward III for his son and heir, Prince Edward who became the first Duke of Cornwall.
It is situated in the beautiful Fowey River valley a mile from Lostwithiel. Nearby are the impressive remains of the 13th century Restormel Castle, which is within walking distance from the nursery.
The nursery offers a good choice of plants, in particular 200 varieties of Camellias, with new varieties available every year from the large range of stock plants. There is also a wide range of Fuchsias throughout the year, with an emphasis on not widely available species and hybrids.
The nursery prefers to find alternatives to chemicals as much as possible. Nursery produced plants are peat free with the exception of ericaceous plants, where peat usage is kept to a minimum. The friendly and knowledgeable nursery staff offer an excellent customer service and are happy to provide expert advice.
The well stocked shop offers a range of quality products including the Duchy Original range of food, toiletries and hampers. Within the shop is a small café and outside a picnic area. A new shop and café are planned and will provide a new visitors centre in a sustainably built cob and timber framed building.
The nursery offers something for the keen gardener and non – gardener alike.
