Finding a nursery of this quality yet only a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh is a real treat. Macplants is run by Gavin McNaughton but it was his mother Beryl who first developed the family’s passion for plants. She started the nursery in the late 70’s from her interest in Alpines and over the last 40 years the nursery has expanded and extended the range of plants to make Macplants one of not only Scotland’s, but Britain’s best nurseries.
Gavin was just a boy when the nursery started, but being surrounded by plants and with his holidays spent working on the nursery it’s no surprise that he joined the family business. Gavin’s academic career wasn’t in horticulture directly but as a Dr of Biochemistry he knows how plants tick and the rest is all learnt from hands-on experience. After graduating he decided he’d rather be outside than in a lab and he hasn’t looked back since.
Today Macplants has an excellent reputation for their huge range of perennials and alpines, ferns and grasses. The nursery boasts thousands of varieties of plants to choose from, some are rare and some are more well known, but the great thing is that they are all grown at the nursery, in fact 100% homegrown!
One of the nurseries specialisms is the beautiful and elegant Himalayan Poppies, Meconopsis. The nursery has been heavily involved as part of the Meconopsis Group in selecting, trialling and bringing new varieties to market, which are now undergoing further trials at the RHS gardens. Gavin and his team can offer expert advice on how to grow them in all corners of the country – not just in Scotland!
This is a real working nursery with helpful staff on hand to guide you to the best plants for you. They also offer an excellent mail order service too. What gardener wouldn’t find Macplants irresistible?
